About this deal

Comprehensively charting her career, from The Kick Inside (1978) to Director’s Cut (2011), Doyle captures a more multidimensional view of the artist, allowing glimpses into her personal life, including the earth-shattering loss of her mother in 1992 and her friendship with David Bowie. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have any photographs — one might expect at least a couple of them in a biography, right? Over three years in the making and featuring a raft of session players and producers, it was a lexicon of both time and craft.

Books like this serves not just as a nostalgic trip but as a reminder to get some of her work into my regular playlists again. Kate Bush: the subject of murmured legend and one of the most distinctive musicians of the modern era. This allowed him a rare view of the musician, one that was not the spriightly elven character as portrayed by many, but of a a craftswoman who cared about her music, and wanted to take the time to make it right. That 50 Visions manages to stick its landing perfectly is due to the delicious irony of its final chapter.

I'm a massive Kate Bush fan anyway but I've come away with a totally new appreciation of her as an artist and as a woman after finishing this book. Kate’s determination to produce herself and her apparent disinterest in touring (post The Tour of Life) are both fairly well known traits but somehow Doyle imbues them with a freshness.

Featuring details from the author's one-on-one conversations with Kateas well as vignettes of her key songs, albums, videos, and concertsthis artful, candid, and often brutally funny portrait introduces a refreshingly real Kate Bush. Because Kate doesn’t subscribe to the usual recording artist life-cycle convention of making an album, actively promoting it, going on tour, taking a short break and then repeating the process, her life can’t be tracked through her public movements in the way that other artists’ can. I also loved learning about her fusing of theatre and music, the way she develops her videos or live performances. I would classify myself as a casual Kate Bush fan (know the hits, like pretty much everything I’ve heard) and this book can appeal to everyone no matter where they fall on the fan spectrum.Using a quirky approach, Doyle weaves in the highlights of the singer’s career: her early days in the KT Bush Band, playing London pubs in the late 1970s; releasing her debut album, The Kick Inside, in 1978, which included the ghostly “Wuthering Heights” and “Running up That Hill,” her most popular song. Her long processes for getting things just right, discomfort around her beauty and her sheer determination to always do her best. She thought it sounded like “a bag of cats”, but Lydon, who had just left the Sex Pistols, heard a fellow renegade.
