What truly sets this model apart, however, is its gaming features. It's hard to notice the degradation in image quality of the resolution halving unless you're looking for it, making this one of the cheapest TVs capable of gaming at 120Hz. It has a decent response time overall, with incredibly low input lag, so the Q6 is a great product for competitive gamers wanting to buy a TV on a budget. Speaking of cables, the 5-Series offers one set of legacy RCA inputs and four HDMI ports, all of which are HDMI 2.0b compliant and one being eARC-enabled. That last port allows you to connect an AV receiver or soundbar system and use one remote to control the volume and inputs – a very handy feature if your home entertainment system has multiple components. Most 4K TVs are also loaded with smart features, which are great for when you want to take a break from games, or for when your roommates want to get in some Netflix-and-chill time. Features include support and functionality for streaming media services, voice search, or mirroring content from your phone or tablet. What is 4K? Given how similar the TCL Roku has been to the Hisense Roku, you might expect picture quality to be along the same lines. It is in some ways, but in others it’s clear TCL and Hisense have taken differing approaches.

Lastly, the 5-Series does have Dolby Vision support and Dolby Atmos passthrough. The former allows the TV to access the highest quality content over streaming services, while the latter can pipe spatial audio to your soundbar without a dedicated streaming player. Panasonic’s mid-range TVs have always rated very highly among the experts, though as recently as last year they were missing key tech for up-to-the-minute gaming. The Panasonic JX940 is a literal game-changer though, thanks to what it calls “Game Mode Extreme”. This adds 4K at 120Hz, VRR, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. That all combines with ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium for an all-round smooth, lifelike gaming experience.

To fit a number of entertainment centers, the 5-Series is available in four sizes: 50 inches, 55 inches, 65 inches and 75 inches. We were sent the 50-inch model for review, but outside of the number of dimming zones, the specs and features remain the same. The TV would overheat with HDR content, too. There was a period of time where the LED light would flash red, and a notification pop up signalling the TV was overheating. It happened across a range of apps, and while it did occur during the year’s hottest days, the window was open and the area well ventilated. I’m not sure heat is a great excuse considering nothing else was affected.

TCL TVs aren't as polished as other brands, as there are often issues with upscaling and local dimming. They also tend to have a wide variety of quirks to contend with. For connections there are three HDMI 2.0b inputs, 2 x USB 2.0, an Ethernet port, headphone, optical out, common interface slot and tuners for satellite and terrestrial. Wireless covers built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Where straight-up visuals are concerned, the JX940 is powered by HCX Pro AI Processor (the same processor that powers Panasonic’s more expensive OLED sets). This smart bit of tech analyses colour, contrast, and clarity in each image to deliver the best possible quality in every single frame. It’s especially good for lightning-fast action. That goes for games, movies, and sport. Not to mention multi-HD support — Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10, or the new HDR10+. It supports Dolby Atmos too, so the sound quality matches the action. ONKYO speakers, specially designed for sound clarity and precision allow a more realistic Dolby Atmos sound experience at home. Some TCL TVs support voice controls, either from the advanced remote or the remote app, but they only support basic commands. You can launch certain apps through voice control and search across multiple apps for content. Unlike some TVs, you can't control the TV's settings through voice controls. It's also a stellar gaming TV with extremely low input lag in Game Mode. It supports HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on two ports, although its first port can output up to 4k @ 144Hz, while its second is limited to 4k @ 120Hz. Still, this TV can take full advantage of 4k @ 120Hz gaming on newer consoles. For PC gamers, the TV has issues outputting anything above 120Hz when connected to an NVIDIA graphics card, so it's better suited for PCs with AMD GPUs. Otherwise, the TV supports every variable refresh rate (VRR) technology for nearly tear-free gaming from any source. Vocal clarity is decent across multiple sources, so you won’t need to worry about not catching the line of dialogue. If you’re concerned, the Dialogue Enhancer feature makes it slightly more pronounced, but not by much. The Google TVs have a medium-sized remote, which isn't bad since it's very comfortable and responsive. The TCL branding is impressively minimal, and the remotes are identical across TCL's 2023 range. It’s rare that a cheaper TV is anything other than functional in its design and the TCL Roku adheres to that viewpoint. It’s like the Hisense R50A7200GTUK Roku TV, with a few changes. The same issues with SD upscaling I noticed with Hisense A7200G are present. It isn’t as poor as the Hisense, but it’s still noticeable how complexions can veer from detailed to waxy when switching between SD and HD signals of ITV’s Tipping Point.
